Madison County Supervisors met on Tuesday to continue their budget discussions, including the budget for the Sheriff’s Office. The Supervisors annually discuss each department and entity to determine what funds are needed and by April of each year, they approve and certify the annual budget for the upcoming fiscal year which begins on July 1.
Tuesday’s discussion appeared to be productive and professional between the Supervisors, the Auditor, and the Sheriff despite months of tension in Board meetings. However, a few minutes into the discussion Madison County Attorney Stephen Swanson interrupted (off camera) to express his disapproval by saying “I just want a reminder that I don’t believe that Ms. Stancil should be discussing the Sheriff on the budget proposal.” Stancil responded with “this is the Sheriff’s Office. I’m not discussing the Sheriff. This is just the office…so, I’m in disagreement with that.” Swanson countered with “I mean, if you want to get sued [unintelligible].” The Supervisors, Sheriff, and Auditor continued discussing the budget for the Sheriff’s Office without further incident.
